Ear Surgery in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and Punta Gorda, FL

If you or your children have ears that protrude or are misshapen, cosmetic surgery may be an option to consider. Dr. Brueck performs ear surgery, also known as Otoplasty, at his Fort Myers practice. Ear surgery is most commonly performed on children ages 4 to 14, but adults can undergo this surgery, as well.

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty can correct ear conditions such as protruding ears, abnormally large ear lobes, lop ear (in which the tip folds down and bends forward), and shell ear (in which certain features of a normal ear are missing).

Am I a good candidate for Otoplasty?

Because there are many operations for the many different types of ear deformities, surgery can be relatively simple or more involved. Each patient’s circumstances require analysis by Dr. Brueck for reconstruction.

Most health insurance companies cover Otoplasty surgery if it solves a functional problem, such as hearing impairment, or to correct a deformity or congenital abnormality. However, if the procedure is being done for cosmetic reasons only, it may not be covered by insurance.

What can I expect from Otoplasty?

Ear surgery lasts about two to three hours, depending on how complex the procedure for your case is. Each patient is different and the length of procedure depends on how involved the surgery will be. Dr. Brueck will provide details about the length of the procedure during your initial consultation.

Most patients will receive general anesthesia during this procedure to ensure the patient is comfortable during the entire length of the procedure. On the day of your procedure be sure to dress comfortably, and wear a shirt that you don’t have to pull over your head to put on.

How long is the recovery from Otoplasty?

You should plan to stay home at least one week following this procedure. Children should stay home from school for at least one week to ensure proper healing and a timely recovery.

Your head will be bandaged before you are sent home. You will most likely wear the bandages for the first couple days to ensure proper healing. Dr. Brueck may provide you with a headband-type dressing, which you may be instructed to wear to promote a healthy recovery.
