Will Tummy Tuck Fix Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis Recti

Diastasis recti is a condition in which the rectus abdominis (the “six-pack” muscles) become separated. This is a common result of multiple pregnancies. It can also result from excessive weight gain.

The rectus abdominis is divided down the middle by a band of tissue called the linea alba. When the belly expands beyond its normal range, such as during pregnancy or following weight gain, the linea alba stretches, thins, and begins to pull apart. In many cases, as weight is reduced, the linea alba will repair itself. In some, it simply cannot, leaving a gap in between these muscles.

Symptoms of Diastasis Recti

Symptoms of diastasis recti include:

  • A protrusion just above or below the belly button
  • A coning of the abdominal muscles when contracted
  • An unusually soft feeling around your belly button

Additionally, this condition can cause chronic low back and pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, difficulties lifting objects, and problems with balance. It can also create pain during intercourse, make walking difficult, and increase your risks for herniation.

Because this is a painless condition, it may be difficult to know if you have diastasis recti. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms, it is a good idea to speak with a doctor who can diagnose and treat the condition.

Treating Diastasis Recti

When separated abdominal muscles fail to come back together, surgical intervention may be necessary. Tummy tuck surgery is designed to reattach these muscles, immediately reducing risks for herniation while at the same time helping to improve general comfort and appearance. It can be used to remove stubborn fat deposits from the midsection along with loose and sagging skin, stretch marks, and more. It can draw in the waist, tighten the abs, and greatly improve comfort and confidence.

Tummy tuck surgery can be performed alone or as part of a larger procedure such as the mommy makeover or during post-weight loss body contouring. During your initial consultation, Dr. Brueck will carefully evaluate your frame and discuss all of your options to help you select the best choices for your needs.
