All surgical procedures require incisions. Incisions leave scars. This is an unavoidable part of the healing process.
At Beauty by Brueck, our board-certified plastic surgeon utilizes the most advanced techniques and intentional incision placement to help reduce risks of visible scarring after plastic surgery. Steps you take both before and after your procedure will play a role in this as well.
Before your procedure, you must stop taking any medications, herbs, or supplements that can thin the blood. These will need to be avoided in the days following surgery as well. Dr. Brueck will work directly with you to help you determine what needs to be avoided and when each item can be added back into your daily routine.
If you use products with nicotine, including smokeless tobacco and e-cigs, you will need to quit at least six weeks before surgery. You must continue to avoid nicotine during the entire recovery process. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor that delays and interferes with the body’s healing response. Its use will aid in the development of thick, ropey, and visible scars.
We will provide you with specific instructions on how to best care for your incisions after surgery. This will include keeping incisions dry and clean, and avoiding anything that could irritate or pull on sutures, such as advanced exercises or physically demanding labor. We will assess your rate of recovery during follow-up visits to help you determine when you can resume all normal activities.
Silicone Sheets and Ointments
Silicone sheets and certain ointments can be used to help reduce the appearance of scars after the tissue has healed. Some laser resurfacing treatments can also reduce the appearance of scars. We can provide additional information on these options, including what we have found to be the most efficacious, during your time in our care.
