Does Breast Lift Surgery Impact Breast Size?

Beauty portrait of a young brunette woman isolated on pink backgroundEver since Kristin Cavallari mentioned having had a breast lift on her Instagram, interest in the procedure has increased. And, with increased interest comes a host of questions about what the procedure may or may not be able to do. One of the most common questions is, “Will having a breast lift make my breasts smaller?”

Breast lift surgery addresses sagging breast tissue, an issue common with age. Women who have had and breastfed multiple children, like Ms. Cavallari, may experience more pronounced sagging than those who have not, although genetics, lifestyle, and even clothing options can play a role in this.

During breast lift surgery, the breast mound is lifted, excess skin is removed, and the nipple is repositioned to produce a perkier, firmer, and more appealing look. Breast tissue is not removed during the procedure, meaning the actual size of your breasts doesn’t change. However, dropping skin and tissue can require a larger cup size than will be necessary after surgery.

Your breasts won’t shrink after a lift procedure. You may go down a cup size all the same.

There are a lot of caveats here, including the fact that cup size is not entirely consistent between brands or styles of bra. Some women experience little to no change in bra size after a lift. Others may. What you experience will be unique to your anatomy, clothing preferences, and the amount of skin being removed. The best way to learn if your cup size will likely be reduced after a breast lift is by discussing the issue with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Talk to Dr. Brueck

Dr. Robert Brueck is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has spent more than 40 years helping women achieve natural-looking breast lift results. A thoughtful and attentive surgeon, Dr. Brueck will carefully examine your breasts to help you determine if a lift will have any impact, however nominal, on your cup size. But remember, cup size is a poor measure of breast volume, which a breast lift will not reduce.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Brueck can touch on this in greater detail and answer all your questions to help you decide if a lift alone or with the addition of implants or a fat grafting procedure might best suit your needs.
