Breast Augmentation Incision Options

Breast Augmentation Incision Options

There are three primary breast augmentation incision options:

  • Periareolar. These are made around the nipple on the areola
  • Inframammary. These are made underneath the breasts, in the crease where the breast and chest connect
  • Transaxillary. These are made in the folds of the armpit

A fourth option, TUBA, places incisions in the belly button. This incision is not often used.

Dr. Brueck prefers the inframammary incision. This incision has the lowest instances of complications. It also allows direct access to the surgical site, helping to ensure the most natural-looking and pleasing results.

What About Scars?

With the periareolar incision, scars are located in the naturally dark and textured skin of the areola. Over time, these scars are likely to become unnoticeable.

Inframammary scars are hidden in the fold between the breast and chest. When breast fullness reduces this fold, scars may become slightly visible. However, with proper care, inframammary scars should fade significantly within the first year.

Dr. Brueck does not offer transaxillary or TUBA incisions.

You can help to reduce the risk of thick and noticeable scars by keeping incisions dry and clean, using your compression garment, avoiding nicotine, and refraining from blood-thinning medications, herbs, and supplements.

If scars do form, scar sheets and ointments may help to reduce their appearance. Chemical peel and laser skin resurfacing can help as well. However, scars are not an issue for most breast augmentation patients.

Saline or Silicone?

Both saline and silicone breast implants can be placed through inframammary and periareolar incisions. Which type of breast implant is right for your needs will be determined during your initial consultation.

Dr. Brueck often recommends silicone breast implants. These implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue. Saline implants may ripple, wrinkle, or crease and are best for women with enough breast tissue to fully cover the implant. Silicone implants are suitable for all women over 21, irrespective of existing breast tissue.

While Dr. Brueck often recommends similar procedural options, each breast augmentation is unique and must be approached as such. Dr. Brueck will take all of the time necessary to understand your desires and needs and will make recommendations to help produce the best results for your body.
