When we think of a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty we think of a cosmetic procedure designed to improve one’s appearance. Tummy tucks are quite popular and part of the infamous “Mommy makeover”. I recently read a great article that came out of the plastic surgery department at Kemal University in Turkey. They studied 30 women who underwent abdominoplasty to see how this operation affected their posture and psychological make-up. Through x-ray images they found significant improvements in the patients posture such as lumbar, cardosis and thoratic kyphoses. Psychologically there was also a significant improvement in the patients lower back pain and improvement in their quality of life. All of these patients had plication or tightening of their abdominal muscle.
