Dr. Brueck MD FACS answers the question, "What is Dysport?"
Before Dysport was approved for use as wrinkle (frown line) treatment, Dysport was prescribed for treatment of cervical dystonia (CD). It was injected into muscles that control involuntary abnormal head position and cause neck pain.
Dysport weakens the muscles for up to 12 to 16 weeks or longer, which can lessen CD symptoms. In this application, Dysport can also have life-threatening side effects, including problems with swallowing, speaking or breathing. If a patient encounters these problems he or she should contact the Doctor immediately.
In its cosmetic application, Dysport is injected into muscles that control facial expressions. The result is a reduction or stopping of the tightening of muscles that contract frequently and repeatedly and cause frown lines. This result is temporary (up to 4 months) and is approved only for patients under 65 years old.
It is important check with Dr. Brueck first when considering Dysport injections. He will want to know if you have received any other botulim toxin product in the preceding four months, if you are pregenant, if you have recently received an anti-biotic injection, if you take muscle relaxant, take an allergy or cold medicine and if you take sleep medicine.
Other possible side effects include:
l dry mouth,
l injection site discomfort or pain,
l tiredness,
l headachel neck pain,
l muscle pain,
l eye problems such as double vision, blurred vision decreased eyesight, problems with focusing the eyes, drooping eyelids, swelling of eyelids,
l allergic reactions such as itching, rash, red itchy welts,
l wheezing, asthma symptoms, orl dizziness or feling faint.
These are all things you should discuss with me or any cosmetic surgeon during a consultation before accepting any injections.
